The Black and Vygekraal rivers that run through our community are a potentially wonderful resource for all of us — but their current state is appalling. The good news from Jonathan Hobday is that a Friends of the Black and Vygekraal Rivers is being formed (along the same lines as the Friends of the Liesbeek).
An interim committee has already registered a “hatchling” Friends group with the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (Wessa).
The next stage in the process is a public meeting at 7pm on Tuesday July 19 (tomorrow night) in the upstairs lounge of the Rondebosch Golf Club. Two experts on our rivers will make presentations: Kevin Winter of UCT (who is also chairman of the Friends of the Liesbeek) and Sonja Pithey, a local resident who has a keen professional knowledge of water affairs.
The aim of the meeting is also to adopt a draft constitution and to elect a Steering Committee to complete the process of formation. If you’re interested in revitalising our rivers, please make an effort to attend.
